Korea lost a lot in the 1950's and really lost it's traditional original qualities that was Korea when the Japanese occupied around 80 to 90 years ago.
Today, Korea is modernizing and very Western in appearance though still is very much an East Asian culture with old influences of Confucian intertwined in the logic of daily living, doing business, and human interaction. It's quite awkward for foreigners as Korea is not accustomed to foreigners, but I advise anyone doing Asian studies to go.
