He's talking about the wave, silly. The shock waves from sub-sea earthquakes are more than capable of tearing through the ocean that fast. When the wave piled up in the shallows, it slowed down of course, trading speed for height, hence why the ol' Poseidon flipped her lid..

i know this movie by heart, every scene every line all by heart, when i watched this, i loved how they made each character very likable, and there was this sense of urgency, I always felt butterflies in my stomach waiting to see who would die, hoping it wasn't the people i really liked, and of course that sense of urgency feeling like i was there, after the first few times I began watching it again and again while painting in my basement, made it more enjoyable and felt right.

The scene where the man fell on the glass floor and the lights all going out is really haunting. This movie really rocked in terms of special effects. One of the best films of the 70's
