Hallucinogen May Reduce Cancer Anxiety

Psilocybin, a hallucinogen that occurs naturally in "magic mushrooms," appears to be a safe and possibly effective treatment for anxiety in patients with advanced-stage cancer, say California researchers.
A 12-patient pilot study conducted at the Harbor-UCLA Medical Center in Torrance, California, showed that a single experience with the drug was associated with a significant reduction in anxiety at 1 and 3 months after treatment and improvement of mood that reached significance at 6 months.
The study is the first research on psilocybin for cancer-related anxiety in more than 35 years.
A variety of hallucinogens were the subject of studies from the 1950s to the early 1970s in cancer patients suffering from anxiety and despair, say the authors of the pilot study, led by Charles S. Grob, MD, professor of psychiatry at the UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine.

  • legalized alcohol, legalized cannabis, legalized shrooms?

  • shrooms make me want to consider everything and become president LOL

  • @DyunArt Agreed. However I apart from psilocibyn mushrooms being physiologically safe, my main point for legalization is the idea that individual sovereignty should be held in the utmost regard; and whether somebody chooses to smoke tobacco/cannabis, take part in a hallucinogenic experience, or snort heroin is their own business. The idea that the government can send thugs over to arrest you and imprison you for being the keeper of your own body & mind, is grotesque and a moral abomination.

  • Finally doctors wise up. It's about time the Government eased up on psilocibyn. If they're going to allow the continued use of highly addictive substances like cigarettes and alcohol which cause thousands of deaths per year, then I don't see how they can possibly restrict the use of psilocibyn. It is neither addictive, nor deadly. Overdosing on psilocybin is very unlikely, and certainly nowhere near as dangerous to the body as cigarettes and alcohol. In fact it is a beneficial substance!
