    I don't think Seward's "Irrepressible Conflict" speech had much to do with him losing the Republican nomination. Lincoln basically said the same thing in his "House Divided" speech. Lincoln won the Republican nomination because he was a westerner and a moderate. The northeast was going to vote Republican regardless of which candidate was running. The western states were swing states.
