THIS IS MY MYSTERY TREE. I PLANTED AN ACORN SLIGHTLY MORE THAN A YEAR AGO, AND THIS IS WHAT GREW. THE LEAVES ARE UNLIKE THE OAK TREE THAT THE ACORN CAME FROM. PLUS IT DEVELOPED THESE AERIAL ROOTS THAT MADE IT LOOK BANYAN-LIKE. IT HAS GROWN A NICE THICK TRUNK IN ONLY A SHORT TIME. THIS IS THE ADVANTAGE OF USING THIS METHOD WITH TROPICAL TREES. ALSO, BECAUSE OF THEIR FAST GROWTH, DIRECTIONAL PRUNING WORKS REALLY WELL, VERSUS WIRING YOUR TREES.
I HAD BEEN HOPING THAT IT WAS A BANYAN TREE, BUT FROM THE LEAF STRUCTURE IT SEEMS TO BE IN THE FICUS FAMILY. THIS IS A MAJOR, MAJOR PRUNING. I AM LOOKING FORWARD TO SEEING THE NEW GROWTH START FROM THE ADVENTITIOUS BUDS THAT ARE JUST WAITING TO SPRING OUT WITH NEW LEAVES. SORRY THAT THE END OF THE VIDEO ENDED PREMATURELY, BUT ALL THAT WAS LEFT OUT WAS "HAVE FUN WITH YOUR BONSAI!"(***PLEASE VIEW PART 12 ABOUT THE WARNING ON HANDLING SPHAGNUM MOSS BEFORE YOU WORK WITH SPHAGNUM MOSS***).

  • you look like a giant caring a regular size tree

  • Did u search the roots for the Acorn.

I wonder did it eat the Acorn ?

  • I think it is a couckoo plant

  • when you plant an acorn do you just shove it in the soil, cross your fingers and water it? Is there anything more?

  • Looks like a Ficus aurea.Florida native Ficus commonly known as a strangler fig.Very fast growing and aggresive tree.I had some very large ones in my yard when I lived in the florida keys.

  • Ficus. Don't not exactly what species, but ficus. I have one of those too.

  • The moss looks great!

I am going to try that method.

I am new to the art of Bonsai. I don't want to be a famous Bonsai artist. I just like the hobby and Idea of me creating a bonsai.Love your art work!

  • Its a ficus tree. I have a ficus bonsai and same color bark and leaf shape. and the white sap coming out from when you cut the leafs gives it away.

  • you should only add the pruneing sealent when its a very large brach or cutting down the trunk so that the tree dosnt dry out. also with the branches it makes it so that it heals over in in not such an ugly fashon. plus if you dont have tree wound sealent you can use patrolium jelly you just have to re apply it every few months.
