The Pretenders are an English-American rock band formed in Hereford, England in March 1978. The original band consisted of initiator and main songwriter Chrissie Hynde (lead vocals, rhythm guitar), James Honeyman-Scott (lead guitar, backing vocals, keyboards), Pete Farndon (bass guitar, backing vocals), and Martin Chambers (drums, backing vocals, percussion). The band has experienced drug-related deaths of the members, and numerous subsequent personnel changes have taken place over the years, with Hynde as the sole continual member.

Brass in Pocket was the band's third single and it was their first success, scoring number one on the UK Singles Chart for two weeks in January 1980 (making it the first number-one single of the 1980s), number one in Australia during May 1980, and number 14 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the United States. The song takes its title from an expression Hynde heard from a member of a Yorkshire-based support band who was looking for his money.

During an interview with The Observer in 2004, Hynde revealed that she was initially reluctant to have the song released: "When we recorded the song I wasn't very happy with it and told my producer that he could release it over my dead body, but they eventually persuaded me."

In the accompanying music video for the single, Hynde portrays a waitress working in a greasy spoon who encounters a sleepy customer. She suddenly sees three men (her band members) approaching in a car outside. Hynde attempts to look elegant on their entrance and is clearly seen flirting with one of the men (Pete Farndon) after they've been seated. Pete doesn't respond to her overtures. Just then, three seductively dressed women (the men's girlfriends) enter the greasy spoon, sit at the men's table and begin to kiss their partners. Farndon's girlfriend isn't impressed when he appears to respond to Chrissie's flirting. Suddenly, the couples decide to leave the cafe without eating. Hynde is saddened and watches them outside leaving in their car, not feeling remotely "special".

It was the seventh video played during MTV's launch on August 1, 1981. (Wikipedia, April 2011)

  • what's with all the horrible distortion at 00:20 ??? it should be all clean tones with that jingly jangly telcastery feelery aka james honeyman-scott

  • @TalkToTheBody

Thanks for viewing. I'm sure you're right however to my ear this was the best I could do with my setup at the time. Tone is very subjective although I know what you mean about not emulating that tele sound on this one. Thanks for the feedback - Ron

  • Very nice Ron. I'm afraid you have at least a couple of the chords wrong ... I've been listening to (& loving) this song for 30 years!! But not a bad version, and VERY nice job synching up the guitar and the bass. I'm suitably impressed. :-)

  • @BerlinerinToni

Yes, you're right. The guitar in this one was very difficult to emulate. I suspect it's probably a combination of the tone from my setup and the selected chords. Thanks for viewing and the feedback. - Ron

  • @iamRottenRon hey no probs, honeyman-scott was very renowned for his chiming guitar arpeggios, something that Johnny Marr I am sure aspired to

Thanks a lot Danielle! I hadn't heard this song in a long time but when it was incorporated into a local TV ad recently I couldn't get enough of it. The only remedy for that is to do a cover :-) Ron

  • one of my favourite songs.....nicely done ron.....

    xx danielle:)

Thanks a lot for viewing and the feedback. It's all part of the learning process - Ron
