  • Animals, Animals, Animals!!!...Interrupting Gerhard Hetzel playing the violin solo!!!!!

  • I love her face at 01:23. This is just like husband and wife arguing. No one else would treat Solti like this. Kiri is a special person.

  • @mariusfelix You can literally translate anything, but if you do not know the language or it's idioms or the context of said words, then you find yourself in a vacuum. Ergo, I always trust the text. Some conductors are not to be trusted, it is true. However, Solti is the exception & provides an excellent example of working to balance the composer's demands with the singer's strengths. Strauss didn't give tempi indications, no metronome markings. We know he deferred to his singers.

  • @GoshGus Do you know what "schweben" means? Don't trust your mentioned translation, trust the German text, and don't trust conductors, trust the music, sometimes it even does know more about itself than its creator...

  • @mariusfelix Too fast? I sing these. From letter E in the PV Boosey Hawkes, the text describes to soul soaring "in flight" will in freien Fluegen schweben" in the enchanted night. The triplets have to move forward to keep the vocal line reflective of the words. You move the tempo so those lines are most elegantly phrased. I trust Solti above all because he knew Strauss & his sensibilities.

  • I love it! Take 28!

  • Sadly, Gerhart Hetzel (co-concertmaster and principal 1st violinist) of Wiener Philharmoniker fell off the cliff during mountain hiking, died from severe head injuries in March 1992.

  • Why so fast? Such a rich music!

  • However beautiful this is (and it surely IS!) her previous recording with Davies on CBS Records (about a decade earlier) is all th emore STUNNING! Listen to it.

  • Wonderful interpretation!!! It´s the best that I ever heard!!!

  • And I just read the lyrics...it's so fitting for death. Do you think it's a coincidence that she was performing it (this song and the rest of the "4 Last Songs") when her parents passed away?
