Which is the best survival knife? Watch this video and find out.

I've had this SOG SEAL Pup for over a year now and I've put it through some hard use. Even when I bought it brand new though it was never sharp enough. My Pup isn't the Elite, it's the M37 aus-6 stainless version. The kydex sheath is excellent, but the blade was terrible.

Then I traded a wool blanket for this Cold Steel SRK carbon version. I learned what a medium sized knife should deliver in terms of capabilities and edge retention. It's way easier to sharpen and it holds an edge like a knife ought to. The drawback with carbon is that it will rust, or stain, especially with a leather sheath.

Even with an inferior leather sheath the SRK carbon won the challenge. The edge retention is superior and the straight edge is preferred for camping related tasks like processing wood, making traps and cleaning game.

The aus-8 version of the SRK looks promising, and I'll be putting one head-to-head, a rematch of sorts, against the newer version of the SOG, the SEAL Pup Elite.

SAR (Search and Rescue) Operations personnel require specialized tools to perform their tasks. The gear they use takes the most abuse, and none more than their knife. That's why the Cold Steel SRK (Survival Rescue Knife) is standard issue to Navy Seals-it can take the punishment. The blade is AUS-8A stainless steel finished in a flat black teflon coating. The clip point is "prybar" strong and fine enough for delicate work. There's plenty of belly for cutting, chopping and skinning. Boasting a thickness of 3/16 of an inch, the SRK offers the ultimate in comfort and safety, which it's rubbery kraton handle that absorbs vibrations made while chopping and batoning. The secure-ex sheaths locks the knife into place and is ambidextrous and molle compatible.

Overall Length: 10 3/4"
Blade Length: 6"
Blade Thickness: 3/16"
Blade Material: Japanese AUS-8A with Teflon finish
Handle Length: 4 3/4" kraton
Knife Weight: 8.2 oz
Sheath: Secure-Ex

  • @diediemydarling13813 Is it the Elite? I was using the model previous to the Elite.

  • hey buddy dont be dissin the sog. u might want sharpen it stupid

  • @ThePaintrain7 Have you even tried the version of the SOG previous to the Elite? If not then shut your trap. You probably didn't even know there was a version before the Elite that had infterior steel. Look it up stupid.

  • "Very dull" ... well sharpen it!

  • @michaelg2460 You honestly didn't think I sharpened it? Wow. You've got to be kidding me. As I stated over a HUNDRED times now THIS WAS THE VERSION BEFORE THE ELITE AND IT HAD SHITTY STEEL. Come on.

  • Thanks for the great video, man. It's too bad you are receiving so much negative feedback as a result of trying to help us all out in making informed decisions and expectations. I already ordered a Cold Steel SRK about a week ago - but the San Mai III version, But this video was still quite helpful. It's a clever idea to do a comparison of knives that have been used as opposed to brand new ones. A knife shouldn't perform well only for the first few uses. Good job.

  • I have the version previous to the elite and it is RAZOR sharp, my friend has the SRK and after 4 hours of hard use the blade became wobbly. In my book the SOG wins.

  • While I have never actually used that specific knife, I have alot of experience with aus 6 steel and I know it can get sharper than that

  • @envirosponsible I DO NOT have the elite, i have the re-designed SOG seal pup, but it ISN'T the elite.

  • @DukeOfTennessee117 What version of SOG do you have? If you missed it the first HUNDRED times I was using the version previous to the Elite. If you have the Elite then you have hands on experience and credibility. If you didn't even know there was a model before the Elite then choose your words more carefully since you're most likely the fool.

  • SHAROEN YOUR KNIFE YOU FOOL! I CUT THROUGH A HOSE WITH MY SOG LIKE BUTTER! Plus my friend has an SRK and we went camping, the blade got wobbly after 3 hours of hard use....

  • I just recently bought the newer SOG seal pup, and am very happy with it.
