Bizarre does not begin to describe this. Elaborate costumes and strange situations, plus a lot of faith in the ability of the audience to follow the story when it meanders equals about the strangest flick ever.
It always amazes me, but these films didn't do well. To try and get "Queen Zixi of Ix" into distribution, it was cut from five reels to two and re-titled "Magic Cloak of Oz". Makes me wonder where the other three reels are, and just what lunacy is on them.
Though filmed by the Oz Film Manufacturing Company and produced by L. Frank Baum, it didn't do so well. The story is - loosely: Two kids end up king and queen on a technicality. Their donkey or mule, Nicodemus, wanders off, defeats robbers with his pals, the forest animals. Queen Zixi hears the kids have a magic cloak, steals it, but it won't work for her and she drops it. Later, Rolly Rogues take over the kids nation, and Zixi retrieves the cloak for the kids to help while Nicodemus once more gathers up his motley crew of varmints to kick some round Rolly butt.
Well, 'Play The Game' starts off with Johnny Kalus singing his version of 'If I Only Had A Heart' so...
These Hopelessly Human tapes are live, incidentally, recorded at a party where I can imagine they often were staring at Johnny like the living cartoon character he is.
We haven't seen Johnny in years, but I imagine he's still making people go "...what?" a lot.
You can see the movie at the Internet Archive, if you're an Oz fan, total must-see. As a bonus, the uploader added music from the stage musical "Wizard of Oz", it doesn't quite fit, but hey. It's Oz.
