One day, Max and Dave got stoned and made a cartoon...

Nearly all the songs used like this one were simply recordings licensed by Paramount's Music Department. They were available to the Fleischers in the same was that Warner Brothers music catalogue was available to Chuck Jones and Friz Freleng. Bimbo steals a chicken to justify the later pre-recorded comment "Chickens you used to steal" - presumably this was an easier crime to portray than "Craps you used to shoot" or "Girls you used to chase."

Thanks for uploading, I love old cartoons like this! I used to watch Twisted Tales of Felix the Cat back in the 90's and I can really tell how old cartoons like this influenced a lot of the modern ones.

Not during the depression. Considering food was as scarce as jobs. I figure I would have defended my food with a shotgun if I had to.

Nice! Good seeing one of the very early Fleischer soundies. Not many of the non-Boop seem to be availible. I wonder who the musicians were. Some good players. If that was just a New York pick up group, impressive!
The punishment for attempted theft of a chicken seems a little extreme.
Against overwhelming condemnation, the Jewish character is sympathetic. "You needed it." Sympathy for the underdog.
The jazz is great.
