Led Zeppelin's infamous return to the stage in Philadelphia's JFK Staduim in July 1985 to support Bob Geldof's international "Live Aid" event to bring relief to the Ethiopian famine. Introduced by Phil Collins, the band takes to the stage with Tony Thompson on drums & Collins tagging along.

This clip has been cleaned up: the green hues from the 20 yr old + tape has been removed, the brightness & contrast have been balanced out.
The audio has been synchronized to the FM broadcast captured on an old cassette tape. That audio was pretty messed up & had lots of dropouts, hopefully the results are satisfactory. The original audio is heard at the beginning of this clip, the enhanced stereo sound starts around :30 sec into the clip.

Enjoy!!

For best results, watch in HQ with headphones.

  • @champiforest with all due respect to the late great John Bonham ,Tony Thompson and Phil Collins don't have to take a back set to anyone. Both those guys are (were in Tony's case) legends on the drums themselves and it will be recorded as such in the history of rock. They certainly weren't there to replace him... they were paying tribute to a colleague who left this earth all to soon.

  • HAHAHAHA... plant looks like Patrick Swayzee

  • @ArmorOfChrist777 Thanks for the reply. Anyone who doubts Phil's abilities should check out his drumming on Robbery, Assault and Battery or Cinema Show.... Think I'll throw that on now! :-)

  • @J4B7 oh yeah old Genesis was friggin aaaawwweeesome! Genesis went thru like 5 drummers before finding Phil...he changed them instantly. Very very underrated as a drummer...he influenced Neil Peart!

  • who put Jimmy's guitar on a Phaser pedal? sounds like crap. Marshall amp cranked, that's all he needs.

  • @J4B7

  • @JohnAllanification It's all good. To me at this level asking who is a better drummer is kind of like asking what's a better color? Red or Blue? The other thing we don't want to lose focus about either is that 1st and foremost this was a fundraiser. Fun for the musicians and audience yes, but at the end of the day they helped feed a lot of people back in 1985. Great chatting with you. Thanks for the conversation.

  • @J4B7 i admit to not thinking as much but i'll consider it now.

    ty for return comment&head's -up.

  • @JohnAllanification Listen to some of the drumming Phil Collins did with Genesis. As far as progressive rock goes he's definitely in the same league as Allan White or Bill Bruford. ...and Tony Thompson? Listen to him with the power station. As far as just SOUND goes, he was the closest there was to JB. I imagine that's why Led Zeppelin asked him to play in the first place.

  • @MW2zeppelinfan331 They didn't need two drummers, Phil was just a self centered cunt who had to make himself known even though it got on people's nerves.
