  • Is that skyline at the beginning supposed to be San Francisco?

  • Hmmm, I can't tell. It's either San Francisco or New York. That pointy building could be the Empire State Building, but it might be the Transamerica Pyramid instead. Circuit City was a national chain, but maybe they tailored their commercials for certain markets? I did record this in the San Francisco Bay Area.

  • @Watcher3223 Well, most of Akai VCRS were European Only Release, but there is some in America.

So far, i like the American VCRS the best because, we have more tape speeds than the one in Europe, which ours in America haves SP/LP/SLP, while the one in Europe has only SP/LP.

  • @cameron20101000

Akai did make VCRs for the North American market. They're uncommon with some models being very rare, but they are out there.

I've not only seen American model Akai VCRs, including two of the model shown on this commercial, I've also owned an Akai VCR before (a VS-525U: two head, hi-fi with built-in stereo amplifier).

Besides, if Akai never sold VCRs in America, then why is there an American commercial advertising one for sale?

  • Sweet.

  • 0:12 Those are actually European-only-VCRs

Akai VCRs were released only in Europe

  • At Christmas, I think they did commercials with Santa Claus riding on the plug. And at the end, when the plug connected into the ground to become the Circuit City store building, Santa came out of the building, going "Ho, ho, ho!"

  • That VCR had some really impressive features for its time...also built very sturdily.. I actually have one of them...Its built like a tank and it still works.. :)

It was a bit expensive though but the remote alone made it worth the price..

  • @WebsterJake if you think VCR was Expensive in these days, check out the Epson Computer in these days, it was $5000.

  • @AnnainCA And it's funny how they say "Just $497!" - which made me laugh, but it was probably sturdy & worth every penny. I'd take that over a $29.99 throwaway DVD player. I also remember when new VHS releases used to hit shelves with staggering prices (such as Disney's limited-time black diamond classics).
