'The Age of Stupid' premiered in NYC this week and Grist's resident smartypants Umbra Fisk took to the green carpet to chat up Heather Graham, Stephen Baldwin and the rest of the film's star-studded cast and guest list about smart ways to curb climate change. Director Franny Armstrong's grim view of earth in 2055 is a cautionary tale about the catastrophes that await us if we continue to ignore climate change.

  • All these stupid world leaders and celebrities flew to this event, in direct opposition to what this absurd movie is about. Yes, they all flew there (including the director), even though the movie says nothing is worse than flying.

  • Moby walked. And a bunch of other people rode bikes. Anyone you talk to at this event is probably very judicious about choosing when to fly, realizing that if you're going to sit on a plane burning fossil fuels that it has to be for something important.

  • He walked from his hotel. How do you think he got there?

You think Moby rides a bike on tour? I guarantee you all of those people fly more than you, me and everyone we know combined.

  • You make a fine point.

Moby lives in the city and walked from his house for this one. Good point about the touring stuff. It's tough. One of those can't let 'perfect get in the way of good' things. It's important that we all try in whatever ways we can. I do think in Moby's case he works with a company that reduces the carbon footprint of his tours. It's called the Green Music Alliance.

  • I guess we could all stand to audit more of our lives like that and cut back on everything. And I mean everything. Flights, hair care products, new cells phones, shoes, thingamijigs, etc... That's not an easy thing to do. But we've got to try. We're gobbling up our resources. Time to take stock. Time to cut back. All of us, celebrity or no.

  • They have the right idea, but it's too late. Too may people don't care, the rulers certainly don't care, and ... there are *too many people*! I'm afraid the earth doesn't want us here.
