In Rotterdam about 25% of all journeys are made by bicycle. That would be a high figure anywhere else in the world, but for the Netherlands it is below average. What that means for the streets is shown in this video. On a cold winter's day in February (2011) the number of cyclists riding around is still very impressive. The modal share for cycling is rising in Rotterdam, just like everywhere else in the Netherlands. Clearly the great separate and protected cycling infrastructure are the reason that already a quarter of all journeys in Rotterdam are made by bicycle. A figure that is only getting "more and more".

  • I'm not sure that you can conclude segregation and infrastructure is what makes for more cycling.

  • @CyclingMikey The facts could not be more clear: country with elaborate cycle infrastructure (NL) mode share of cycling ca. 30%. Countries without cycle infra (UK/US/Aus etc) mode share ca. 1%. Countries with some infra (Germany/Danmark) mode share ca. 15-20%.

  • SUPER SUPER

  • Looks like a nice place to live.

  • The Netherlands, together with Denmark, is an example of adaptation to modern times.

Expensive fuels, pollution, lack of exercise.

In my country, I hope soon, take this iniciativa (increasing)

  • Unfortunately in the UK, most people drive and can't see any alternative. If only the politicians would demonstrate vision, intelligence and think logically, they would realise that getting cars off the road and onto bikes would benefit congestion; pollution; public health; boost businesses and the economy.

At the moment, expecting politicians to lead, instead of following the opinions of a public misinformed by a mostly anti-cyclist news media [newspapers], is unfortunately just too much.

  • I wish Germany would put so much effort into putting bicycle infrastructure into place as the Netherlads are. I usually have to ride on the street with all the stupdi cars passing me.
