Title: Heartbreak Hotel (track 01)

Artist: Elvis Presley
Album: Heartbreak Hotel
Year: 1956
Label: RCA
Writer(s): Mae Boren Axton, Thomas Durden, Elvis Presley

Lyrics:

Well, since my baby left me,
I found a new place to dwell.
It's down at the end of lonely street
at Heartbreak Hotel.

Heartbreak is so lonely baby,
Heartbreak is so lonely,
Heartbreak is so lonely I could die.

And although it's always crowded,
you still can find some room.
Where broken hearted lovers
do cry away their gloom.

Heartbreak is so lonely baby,
Heartbreak is so lonely,
Heartbreak is so lonely I could die.

Well, the Bell hop's tears keep flowin',
and the desk clerk's dressed in black.
Well they been so long on lonely street
They ain't ever gonna look back.

Heartbreak is so lonely baby,
Heartbreak is so lonely,
Heartbreak is so lonely I could die.

Hey now, if your baby leaves you,
and you got a tale to tell.
Just take a walk down lonely street
to Heartbreak Hotel.

You'll be so lonely, baby
You'll be so lonely
You'll be so lonely you could die

Although its always crowded
You still can find some room
For broken hearted lovers
to cry away the blues

Heartbreak is so lonely, baby
It is so lonely
They'll be so lonely, they could die

When I first heard "Heartbreak Hotel," I could hardly make out what was being said. It was just the experience of hearing it and having my hair stand on end. We'd never heard American voices singing like that. They'd always sung like Sinatra who enunciated well. Suddenly, there's this hillbilly hiccuping with echo and all this bluesy background going on. We didn't know what the hell Presley was singing about or Little Richard or Chuck Berry. It took a long time to work out what was going on.

This song was actually inspired by a newspaper report of a suicide. because a man had jumped to his death from a Miami hotel window leaving a poetic note behind: "I walk a lonely street."

On this day in 1956 {May 21st} Elvis performed only four songs at a concert in the Municipal Auditorium in Topeka, Kansas...

The concert was cut short because an estimated 2,500 fans stormed the stage...

The four songs he performed were "Heartbreak Hotel" {which was #1 nationwide}, "Blue Suede Shoes", "Money Honey", and "Hound Dog"...

    R.I.P. to The King {1935 - 1977}...

"Good records just get better with age. But the one that really turned me on, like an explosion one night, listening to Radio Luxembourg on my little radio when I was supposed to be in bed and asleep, was "Heartbreak Hotel." That was the stunner. I’d never heard it before, or anything like it. I’d never heard of Elvis before. It was almost as if I’d been waiting for it to happen. When I woke up the next day I was a different guy."- Keith Richards
