Rousing Jacobite song of high expectations on the news of Charlie's landing on the West coast.

The news frae Moidart cam' yestreen,
Will soon gar mony ferlie,
For ships o' war hae just come in,
and landed Royal Charlie.
Come thro' the heather, around him gather,
Ye'r a' the welcomer early;
Around him cling wi' a your kin,
For wha'll be King but Charlie?

The Highland clans wi' sword in hand,
Frae John o' Groat's to Airlie,
Hae to a man declared to stand
Or fa' wi Royal Charlie.

Then here's a health to Charlie's cause,
And be't complete and' early;
His very name our heart's blood warms-
To arms for Royal Charlie!

Come thro' the heather, around him gather,
Come Ronald, come Donald, come a' thegether,
and crown him rightfu', lawfu' king!
For wha'll be King but Charlie!

  • I'm not a Monarchist, so I couldn't honestly call myself a Jacobite, but this song's certainly rousing, although a wee bit sad at the same time, when you think of how it all ended.

  • I think it warns of the dangers of ordinary people pinning all their hopes on a 'Saviour'. Beware of Pied Pipers!

  • The fact that this song is still sung shows the cause (for independence) is not lost. Charlie was defeated, but the hopes of Scotland will never be.
