I tried to make this a lesson in approaching the playing of a jazz ballad. Please don't take this as in any way to be the definitive approach - many of my friends also uploading this sort of material on Youtube have other ways to do it (see
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ykBtn6pabBQ I have just tried to explain (using text overlays) some of the ideas that I use.
If you have a fast connection and want to see this in high quality video to see the notes clearly (and improved audio), add the letters &fmt=18 straight after the existing internet address line above.

  • ...if I put with all yours music-videos together at last I have a fabulous virtual book of Jazz.

I really would prefer to understand English better, however...

thanks to God they are translators-software and when this sofware does not work

I succeed to understand the greater part through

your notes and chords what you mean to say.

The Chords to the end 4:59 are Beautiful, that resolution I have only heard one time from the Great Hank Jones. Thanks for posting this head work.

  • Hi Alfonso

Thanks for this - I also owe you some thanks for the things I have got from your videos. I just today saw the reharmonized 'Someone To Watch ..' you did with chord voicings shown in text. Youtube is a great place to share these musical ideas!

  • I am of course in awe of your fine playing, Doug.

Could I ask,is this a new version of tha told favourite ' I Threw a Custard in Her Face ?.

  • I love jazz ballads. Especially when it has slow stride and slight swing to it. You know, just very breezy and cool, non intrusive in a way. Doug your ballad playing is no exception ^_^ Im a big fan of your ballad style.

  • Delicious

  • I love your chord subs on this. I will absolutely try them out.

  • I love this tune. 4:14 was totally cool and unexpected. I had to do a double take and rewind. Good work.
