This tutorial is an extension to my last one about programming GUI interfaces in Ruby in Steel. This time, we are using a more platform independent toolkit to easily creating native widget applications that work very well.

As you are probably well aware, Ruby does not have too many solid solutions to creating desktop applications, so I am showing you one of them.

  • lacking testosterone and a proper editor (or knowing to work with it) ^^

    but shoes is great!

but god - i see 10 min video - shoes - and that is what comes out?

oh me gosh the world is littered by semi-hello-world tutorials

im sure you can do better!

  • @prim3minister First of all, I'm not sure that "lacking testosterone" has anything to do with the tutorial itself. Second, this is hardly just a semi-"Hello World" tutorial, considering it goes over more than just displaying some static text in a window. Last, it is 10 minutes because some people may be writing their first ruby or shoes app, meaning that they need extra explanation.

Note: The world is littered by people that leave un-constructive comments.

  • @VgBerg Ruby is an interpreted language and while there are compiled interpreted languages, they are not compiled to machine code, but rather to bytecode or an intermediate language that is then either compiled at runtime by I just-in-time compiler or interpreted directly. Ruby has no JIT or bytecode compilation features so in short, you can only write the script and run it, no compilation.

  • thanks connor. a great help for me. please do some more shoes tutorials.

  • @Cmppayne26542 You could have used a better internet connection.

  • Assume that we know about ruby programming and please don't say "Start off with..." ANYTHING other than a she-bang, unless you don't plan on making it open source and compatible with other platforms.

  • Thanks,nice vid

but I was wondering what I should get started with.the ones I have in mind are Visual Basic Delphi,or Ruby...the thing is,well was,Ruby doesn't have a GUI,so I kinda dropped it off.now that I see your vid,I'm back to the 3 choices again. could u reccomend one for a begginer...?

Also,if I didn't use a GUI extension, how would one add buttons to especific places and add a command to them and all that? I kinda thought ALL programming was like Basic(GUI)...so,i'm confused.

  • How do you compile it to a Windows Executable?

  • It was hard to load for me, too. I switched to Opera, and it went OK. Google Chrome had a tough time, for whatever reason. Could be your browser. Awesome video!

  • Ruby Rocks!
