Transparent single crystals of halite were deformed together with brine in a see-through deformation rig. The uppermost crystal is pre-deformed and deforms plastically. The lower two crystals are not pre-deformed and deform by pressure solution at contact edges. The experiment was post-processed with PIV and the velocity vector field nicely shows the gradually deforming pre-deformed crystal. The temperature is 85º and approximate axial stress on grain edges is 15 MPa. This movie is part of the PhD thesis ( http://darwin.bth.rwth-aachen.de/opus3/volltexte/2011/3497/pdf/3497.pdf) by Joyce Schmatz. Joyce MOVIE of the WEEK, CW 10, 2011.
