After taking care of my father until his death, this is one of the lovely places I visited.

From the beginning of the construction of Aaculaax in San Marcos on Lake Atitlan in Guatemala, tourists would arrive and ask if they could help out. Each had their own reasons: some wanted to learn new skills or to help in an environmentally friendly project; others hoped to practice Spanish or make a difference in a diverse community. People came with a wide spectrum of skills; they welcomed carpenters, cooks, electricians, painters, web-designers and permaculturists, among others. A room was offered in exchange for 4 hours of work a day and some stayed for months at a time, contributing to the hotel and enjoying all the opportunities in San Marcos. This project is still thriving. The low season (September to December) is the best time for creative people to stay and work. If you are interested, contact Aaculaax or simply stop by when you're in the area: http://www.aaculaax.com/index.html
