Just to set the record straight:
1. This IS THE SHIELDS. NOT Lee Andrews & The Hearts.
2. FRANKIE ERVIN is the lead singer.
3. The Shields were from Los Angeles NOT New York.
4. Jesse Belvin does the falsetto (the high-pitch oo-wee-oos) in the background. Belvin formed this group consisting of Ervin & some session back-up singers to cover the original version by The Slades. After hearing the master, he felt something was missing so he overdubbed his falsetto vocals.

One of the all-time great rock ballads but definitely not Lee Andrews & the Hearts. This was the Shields' recording on the Dot label.

This is definitely not Lee Andrews or any of his group 'The Hearts' (they had many other great hits).
This isn't really 'The Shields' although they are credited as the singers.
Who is the mystery singer???
This is the one...the only...Jesse Belvin, who did more than sing.
As a performer fighting for black recognition in the South, he did a concert in Little Rock in 1960 despite many death threats. As he left he and his wife were killed in a car crash. Car tampering?
