  • Amazing, she just looks like a queen, we need more videos of Yma!

  • Actually, this particular footage was from her 1961 Bucharest, Romania show. She wore entirely different gowns in Moscow. Of course, for some odd reason, it has a 1950 studio version of the song dubbed over even though she did sing this song at that same show and recordings of it exist on commercial releases. In fact, I understand that this whole show was broadcast on TV. Does anyone have a source for the original video in a quality that is good enough for a release along side the CD, Recital?

  • Grandiosa exepcional unica, descansa en paz princesa Inca.

  • for Jupitroid:

I disagree with you. Yes the arrangements of Vivanco are great, although most of them are actually traditional peruvian Huaynos to the beat of Hollywood. But regardless, there is no need to call Billy May or Les Baxter names. At least they had much success,.... have you?

Yma Sumac 's music is Extraordinary.... and that includes her Mambo too.

    IKE.

  • sumaccoylurrity

  • Thank you. Yes, I knew I was on shaky ground with that one. I was tired and it was late and I wanted to go home. I should have said Peruvian folk. I was married to a girl from Peru, so I do know a little bit about their culture, though I'm obviously no expert.

On YouTube type in Yma Sumac Incacho and Yma Sumac Karawi. From those you'll get a better sense of her place in musical history. Karawi starts off being overly dramatic, but give it a chance, it's a very beautiful song.

  • Thank you very much. But let me say that something like "traditional inca" does not exist.

  • > i cant see what is so great in her, to tell you the truth...

I dearly love Yma but I have to agree about the kitsch. Her most famous work, by the craptastic cheesebags Billy May and Les Baxter is what those guys imagined Peruvian music to be. Their imaginations were piss poor. You need to listen to her songs that were arranged by Moises Vivanco. That music has true emotional depth. It's a brilliant fusion of jazz and traditonal Inca. There she shines like the Sun and is truly great, timeless.

  • simplemente expectacular!!
