New documentary tells the story of Fred Cruz, a Texas prisoner in the 1960s who with only an 8th grade education, taught himself law and led the state's rising prisoners' rights movement. With effective "writs of habeas corpus" he caught the attention of the courts, and one female lawyer whose collaboration would provoke a transformation of the Texas prison system. National public TV broadcast premiere on the PBS series Independent Lens is Tuesday, June 3rd, 2008. Narrated by actor Jesse Borrego, from a script adapted by Dagoberto Gilb, author of "The Flowers" and "The Last Known Residence of Mickey Acuna." Cinematography by Deborah Eve Lewis.
