@AtomPilsener did you ever read Tom Clancy's Red Dawn Rising set in 1989, in which the Soviet Union, lost most of it's oil reserves to Muslim Terrorists, instead of asking for help decided to attack Western Europe instead, as it turned out, within a month of the novels released, the Berlin wall, came crumbling down closely followed by the collapse of the old Soviet Union.

Find and look in google stats economy and "funds" USSR before and after the beginning gorbachev's reforms. (keyword - "reforms")

Also look stats throughout all history and compare them with similar in other countries.

Cool story. Meanwhile, the old USSR was already an empire with a rotten foundation by the 80's, it's economy a shambles held together more by wishful thinking than substance. It's death was a mercy for everyone involved given that the only alternative would have been an eventual complete collapse that would have made the troubles Russia experienced like a picnic. Or WWIII and the eradication of a considerable portion of manking, including 90%+ of the russian population.
