The "&fmt=18" hack also works:

High Definition videos take a lot longer to load ... I personally think that the wait is well worth it.
Try this with headphones on. This piece of music has been re-encoded using the H264 Codec and converted from 680 x 340 into 1280 x 720 format. The video was originally recorded using Windows Movie Maker. The encoding process has resulted in horizontal elongation. The audio was converted into AAC format @ 256 Kbps. The video stream is @ 990 Kbps - which explains why the video takes so long to load.
The "&fmt=22" hack is only suitable for fast processors and high speed internet connections.

Using the "&fmt=22" hack allows the viewer to hear the guitar at its' best.
This video clearly demonstrates that you do not have to spend a lot of money on expensive equipment to produce a video with decent audio.

  • That was a beautiful composition, Michael. Very reflective and relaxing music. Watched this in 720P, and it took a while to load, but the sound was superb. It's too bad you can't get 256 kbps AAC on lower resolution videos. There should be an option for musicians to improve the audio quality without being forced to upload an HD video.

  • @SqwishTV: Thanks Jeff! I used to do a lot of work on video formats before things started to settle down on YouTube. When I first started out I was astonished to learn that videos played back in monaural sound ... so I carried out a load of experiments uploading in flv format and finally found a way to get stereo.

These experiments were to determine the lowest trigger point for HD playback using recordings made with a low-fi webcam. I still have the notes I made at the time ... cont

  • @SqwishTV: #2: and when I find them I will send them to you. With this method you can take an old video and transcode it into "pseudo" HD format and you get much better sound quality due to the fact that the HD format allows more bandwidth for the audio.

All the software used is freeware and quite easy to use. I even saved all the screenshots so the settings are already worked out for you.

    Regards ... Michael

  • @SqwishTV: #3: A good example of the flv method is "Sunny Sunday Afternoon" .... use the blue link (&fmt=18) in the notes and you will notice that the video opens in a much larger screen and the sound is much better. The uploaded file size was tiny compared to the HD videos available now - only some 11.4 Mb in size.

The method was also suitable for sending videos by email - with a little tweaking you could get the files to just under 10 Mb and send them as an attachment.

  • Just listened to this in the fmt=22 format. sounds like we're in the same room....and hopefully we soon will be. missed ya mate :))
