No, he wouldn't have directed it if it was just a sellout, he would have made a younger guy do it. I think he was just too attached to the movie. In real life he is a little bit of a car nut, and he came up with the idea for cars and cars 2, and wrote both screenplays, and since he makes all the calls, why not give himself a project to work on. Yeah, it may not have been the best, but I think Lasseter had fun making it.
