No matter how you use light, when you blow it and you are at the Venice film festival, you will see a huge video, never a film. Video has half of exposure options than film. Red, viper, Alexa they all have the same issue.

Yes movie making is being deskilled.
easier for a normal person to grab a camera and make a movie. But the art of movie making remains the same. even harder because it today we've set a standard that was nearly impossible to make 30 years ago.

Properly lit digital is as good as film with many added benefits. What I do hate is when DP's throw the lighting rules (contrast ratios and zones of exposure) out the window because they are shooting digital and suddenly think you don't need to light it properly. For an excellent example, see the latest Michael Mann offering "Public Enemies" (very poorly lit IMHO) and compare it to something epic (i.e. Apocalypto) which was shot on digital but lit properly. CHalk and cheese.
