Menswear designer John Varvatos describes his new store at 315 Bowery as a "cultural space" — a generous term for what was once the dirtiest, punkest club in the East Village. Kids looking for where the Ramones played may be surprised by the coats and shoes, but they'll be somewhat mollified by the pinball machine, the old audio equipment, and the in-store performances. Take a video tour with New York's Tim Murphy and Phil Pinto.

  • This is so wrong on so many levels.

I was a young HC/punk who found a home away from home at CBGB in the early 80's and in the late 80's I started working there and was there til the end in 2006.

I would rather see a McDonalds or Starbucks in our old space than this boutique that represents the opposite of everything we stood for.

800 dollar "punk" boots and 90 dollar "punk" t-shirts.

Better we be forgtten than have our carcass defiled to give this leech credibility.

  • This reeks of Marie Antoinette pretending to be a peasant in her huge garden in Versailles even as real peasants were starving. Can he be sued for profiting off of the CBGB name?

If a student (I was a psych major in school) takes credit for something that other people created, it's called plagiarism and he/she would probably get kicked out of school. But if John Varvatos does the same thing, it's called a "ressurection". Someone should have torn down the walls when CBGBs closed.

  • i wonder if the bathroom still smells like piss ahhh goodtimes in that bath room

  • You know, we have a recession going on right now with more and more people without a place to stay warm (particularly in New York!), I'm sure Mr. Varvatos wouldn't mind living up to his creed and letting them stay there all day to stay warm, or to have a place to stay. I'm sure their funky smell or haggard appearance wouldn't get in the way of selling $800 "punk" boots.

The only thing I hear of in Manhattan that is just as disgusting as this is what's happening in Harlem.

  • FUCKENN DICKKK dosnt know what OMFUG means arggg gayy prickk

  • Well, at least he preserved a lot of the culture from CBGB.

  • John Varvatos Bowery,IS A FUCKING IDOIT N FAGGOT FOR DOING THIS 2 CBGBS JUST PIST ME OF HES DOING THIS FOR HOLLYWOOD PPLE FUCK HIM!!!!

  • I am not as old as you, but I've been begging my mom to take me to that club since I was 12. And this is wrong. That idiot didn't even know what OMFUG stood for. So much for preserving it.

    xx
