If the bush warbler
Did not sing
From the valleys,
Who would know
The coming of spring?

Though deep in the mountains
Snow still covers the pines,
In the capital
People gather young shoots
From the fields!

If the cherry blossom were not known
To our world,
Perhaps our hearts would be
Peaceful at spring time.

On horseback
We go to the old capital
At Nara;
See how the blossoms are scattered
Whiter and deeper than snow!

Will only passing strangers
Glance back and see
The wisteria in bloom,
Billowing in waves
On my cottage?

Sing, warbler, sing!
Never cease your song!
For spring
Comes only
Once a year.

Yoshizawa Kengyo II (1808 - 1872) komponierte dieses Stück für Koto, die japanische Zither. Der Titel Haru no Kyoku bedeutet Frühlingsode; es ist in einem neoklassischen Stil geschrieben, der in der Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts eine Gegenbewegung bildete zur sentimentaleren Shamisen-Musik, eine dreisaitige Laute, die sich zu dieser Zeit zum beliebtesten Instrument entwickelte. Yoshizawa Zenyo komponierte vier Koto-Suiten nach den vier Jahreszeiten, die als ein Hauptwerk dieser Musikbewegung gelten. Das vorgestellte Beispiel ist ein instrumentales Zwischenspiel, das zwischen vertonten Gedichten aus dem Kokin waka shu (10. Jhdt) steht. Tsuge Gen'ichi hat sie ins Englische übertragen.

Es spielt das Ensemble Zumi-Kai.
