"What is Aspergillus?" Aspergillus is a very common mold that is found in climates all around the world. There are several hundred mold species of this genus. Because this mold is very aerobic, it is a mold that often affects the lungs, causing some significant health issues. It is particularly harmful to those with compromised immune systems. Aspergillosis is a disease that is caused by Aspergillus, and there are different forms of this disease. One form of the disease causes respiratory symptoms such as wheezing and coughing, but does not actually invade or destroy tissue. Another type affects people with immune system problems, as I mentioned before. In that case, the mold invades and damages tissues in the body. While aspergillosis can affect people who are otherwise healthy, it is most common in people with asthma or cystic fibrosis. Because this mold is airborne, it's almost impossible to completely avoid breathing in some Aspergillus spores. So don't panic, you should be OK, but if you do have other health issues you may need to be concerned.
