Performed by Ensemble Aleph the 14th August 2010 in Mazsalaca, Latvia
(in the framework of the 5th Workshop for Young Composer)

"Beep-Ooh is a work for clarinet and a solo percussionist who has a large number of instruments to handle. The instrumentation of the percussion part is for one "beeper," a small cabaza, two wood blocks, three finger drums, a able, one clay-drum, four small metal tubes, three dubaci, a cow bell, two large metal tubes, a saw, and one kettledrum.
The work is an example of the kind of nature music described above. The natural subject is a hooter, a bird whose hoots and squawks sound unmusical. The clarinet, solo, begins by imitating some of these sounds, and in doing so suggests the pattern or complex sound components in these seemingly simple sounds.
The percussion enter, their sounds sometimes merging with and sometimes clashing with the clarinet sounds. The work is about fourteen minutes long and comprises two movements, played without pause, of practically equal length. After the introduction, the first movement is rapid, with fast melodic patterns in clarinet echoed in an active percussion part. The clarinet, even when playing melodic lines, tends to keep its version of the harsh tones of the hooter bird.
The transition to the final movement slows things down by stages. Now the percussion often adds color (frequently a metallic, clangorous color) to longer-held notes. The mood is mysterious, though at times the sound rises to a harsh, loud scream in the clarinet's penetrating upper register.
If Beep-Ooh is a nature portrait, it is a reminder that nature can be hard and dangerous. It is essentially an atonal work, and although it is impressive and communicates a sense of power and danger quite well, the music is uncompromising and has a high proportion of sounds that are inherently irritating to the nerves.
Beep-Ooh was premiered in the Berwald Hall in Stockholm on September 19, 1995 by clarinetist Martin Fröst and percussionist Niklas Brommare."
