A 60-year-old woman blind for nine years has regained useful vision following a rare operation in Miami in which surgeons removed one of her teeth, drilled a hole in it, inserted a plastic lens into the hole and implanted the tooth-lens combination into her eye. Chuck Fadely / Miami Herald Staff

A rare condition that destroys cells on the eye's surface left Kay Thornton blind for nearly a decade. Earlier this month, doctors used a tooth and part of the lining from her cheek to create a 'window' that allows light into the eye. (Sept. 16)
