Recorded live at the Alpine Valley Ampitheater in East Troy, Wisconsin on July 3,1979. It was taken from an AM mono radio broadcast during a thunderstorm. The storm caused a lot of problems with the broadcast so the quality is so-so but as live recordings of the MONOLITH tour are rare this is a diamond in the rough literally. The recordings that were circulated of this show came to be known as "Monolith In The Storm". The song was written by Kerry Livgren and Steve Walsh and appears on the 1976 album LEFTOVERTURE. Thanks to You-Tube user Belexes for the corrections.

Steve Walsh - Lead Vocals, Keyboards
Kerry Livgren - Keyboards, Guitars
Robby Steinhardt - Vocals, Violin
Rich Williams - Guitars
Dave Hope - Bass
Phil Ehart - Drums

    1 Night Tonight

I was wondering if I can hear & listen to all of the 16 Kansas songs from the "Monolith In The Storm" Tour of 1979. I like to check out both live versions of "Point Of Know Return" & "The Wall." By any chance, can you update any of the oldies Kansas concerts from 1979 & especially the "Monolith" tour. "Monolith" to me is the last magicial ride of Kansas in their ultimate 70's career.

  • I've posted 5 songs from this show and may post a few more sometime in the future. There are 2 other shows that I know of (and have) from this tour and both of those are worse sound quality wise than this one. The tour was just called the Monolith tour. This bootleg of this show is called "Monolith In The Storm" because there was a huge thunderstorm during the show that really screwed up the AM radio broadcast of the show. You can hear a thunder crash early in the post of "Angels Have Fallen" .

  • Great post Rick..... Now all you have to do is find a better live version of this tune. The 94 show doesn't count..... I've always felt that the Monolith tour sounded much better than the AV tour....

  • Thanks Marc! I'm always trawling for new rare Kansas material! You can be assured that if I find it I'll post it.I may be tapped out though and playing a waiting game like everybody else. We'll see!

  • rickyon:

    These posts are so excellent!

I have a tape I made from 1980, that Kansas did live called "A Night On the Road." I taped it from WWCT in Peoria, IL

Do you have anything like that? Just won dering.

  • Are you talking about October 29,1980 at the Uptown Theater in Chicago, Illinois w/ John Cougar & The Zone? There was a radio broadcast of this show and a bootleg exists. I have it and I've posted 4 songs from it. Search Kansas live Chicago on my channel and compare with my posts and let me know if they are the same. There were 3 other shows in Illinois that year on the Audio-Visions tour. Your recording may have been from another show in another city so let me know if that's the case!....Rick

  • One of the truly overlooked Kansas tunes. No matter what Walsh was like, he could sing his ass off. He is and will always be THE VOICE of Kansas

  • This was supposed to be my first Kansas concert, but I wasn't able to get a ride. I was too young to have a driver's license yet. I got to see them four days later, though, in Minneapolis. What a great show and tour!

  • background vocals ruin this

  • Sorry for the double post. I have a reputation of a dumbass to uphold.

  • This tour was not only my 1st Kansas concert, it was my 1st concert! Molly Hatchet opened for them. Saw them at Maket Square Arena in Indianapolis. They opened with this song. I remember the stage was draped, and the stage filled with fog during the intro, opened up and the fog poured out onto all the stoners lucky enough to grab a floor seat . The lasers in 'Closet Chronicles' took my breath away. Probably my favorite concert of all time. Damn, what a show!

  • There are lots of very high notes in this song, which is one of Kerry's favorites, and Steve hits them all.

  • @2manifest2 100% agreement on both points. This was an absolutely great song.

And Walsh had the best voice of any rock singer of the 70's. What a tremendous gift- sky high range, pure and clear, but with tremendous depth and power.

  • I was at this concert, both shows in support of the Monolith album and they played every song on that album.

They played tight but because they felt it necessary to play the entire new album they did not have room apparently for some older stuff from the first 2 albums.
