March 10, 2009 (CHICAGO) (WLS) -- The rock band U2 is in Chicago on Tuesday night to promote their new album.
The location was supposed to a secret. But the secret's out. They will be at the Metro on North Clark Street.
There's no concert. It's just a promotional appearance on radio. But it's still generating a whole lot of excitement.
The event organizers went to great lengths to try to keep the location a secret too. In fact, all of the fans who were lucky enough to win tickets were supposed to meet at a Michigan Avenue hotel and then take buses to the venue. They weren't supposed to know where the bus was going to be stopping but now the secret is out and the name is even on the marquee at the Metro.
It's far from a beautiful day in Chicago but that's of little concern to U2 fans. If they were hoping to hear the band play, well, they still haven't found what they're looking for but at least the mystery is no longer. The street has a name.
"The reason I think it's so cool is they're remembering where they came from. Here's a band that in the old-fashioned way made it by being supported by radio stations all over the country," said Norm Winer, WXRT station manager.
In honor of their new CD, "No line on the horizon,"WXRT has been dubbed U-Tuesday. The station is playing music exclusively from the Irish quartet all day.
"I think we had to play pretty much ever U2 song they ever did and maybe some stuff that wasn't quite authorized today to fill up the whole day. So people are not being shortchanged," said Frank E. Lee, WXRT Disc Jockey.
The band has also announced they will kick off their North American tour in September at Soldier Field. Last week they performed several songs live on Good Morning America.
"It's a credit to the people of Chicago and the music bands of Chicago. People love music so much and there are so many of them and they're so passionate about it. These are the most responsive and receptive music fans of just about any city in the country," said Winer.
This is the second of a three night promotional tour for the band. Monday night the band was in L.A. and Wednesday they'll be in Boston.
Security is very tight. On Tuesday evening, there was line of fans hoping to see the band as they walk in. They will not be getting in without a wrist band.
