We have an old gas boiler and gas fire in our lounge. I am happy enough with the back boiler as it does a good job heating the house, easy to maintain, and very reliable. However. I realised very early on that the gas fire was a possible danger -
It uses a pilot light to ignite the fire.
If the pilot light goes out, and some one were to put on the gas for the fire, the gas would possibly collect in the lounge or the chimney leading to an explosion if that pockert of gas ignites.
Simple solution - disconnect and isolate the pipe to the fire.
(The back boiler does not have that problem - if the pilot light goes out a cut-out sensor switches the gas off to the back-boiler).
So that leaves me with a fire that cosmetically is very nice but is redundant. This year, I decided to make this appliance look more inviting and less like a redundant appliance.
I got hold of a chain of red christmas lights (LED type) and threaded them carefully through the back areas of the fire elements and the surround. The end result was very pleasing and does add a lot of cozy ambience to the room at night.
The video also demonstrates the clever use of plug-in remote control electric plugs. These neat devices allow appliances to be easily switched on and off using a remote control. As well as the lighting in the lounge, I used one to control the TV power. The computer centre I built has all the wires and cables hidden inside it. Rather than have switches to isolate the power, I have remotes hidden down the back to control the Router and another to switch on the power to all the other computer equipment.
