@dontrequest In normal service the 1938 stock had a 'guard's area' ate the leading end of the last car. It was divided off from the rest of the car by a steel bar across the gangway. The guard had the use of the tip-up seats on either side should they wish to sit down between stations.

I remember these so well....High Barnet was our local tube station...it's funny how old design and materials seem so much more HUMAN than modern transport (including buses) which seem harsh, sterile and presumably contain loads of surveillance...how times have changed...I must get down to Isle of Wight....

Do you know if there are any of these 1930s stock left serviceable that get used on heritage outings or any use at all?

@omnicity43 well there is the heritage train but whether it is in a serviceable condition is a different matter.
If you can visit the open day near to Acton Town stn this weekend (12/13 March 2011) you may even see it as a static exhibit.
