An acoustic cover of Thrice's "Digital Sea"

As some of you may know, I (Chris) am a huge Thrice fan and I love this song. I've wanted to get a video of this for a while, and now that I've got my Mac I was able to do it. The commercials don't lie - it really was simple. You can thank YouTube's annotations for allowing us to make it pop-up video style.

On the guitar, I did my best to mimic the melodies in the verses with the riff, keeping a steady strum to keep the beat. I keep it quiet so there is a distinction in the dynamic when the chorus comes in. For the chorus, I open it up and let all the strings ring out on the open chords. I felt giving it a fuller sound in the chorus was more important to keep the dynamic of the song in tact (as opposed to playing the individual melodies), The original has that sweeping pad synth to give it a big sound, and I felt the open chords best replicated that. For the ending, I just did my own thing there, as the original ends with just the beat.

As for the vocals - well, I'll admit, they aren't great on this track - you can see a nice comment war we got into with a fellow "fan" about them. ha!

Here are the lyrics to the song:

I woke, cold and alone
Adrift in an open sea
Caught up in regrets
And tangled in nets
Instead of your arms wrapped around me
And I wept, but my tears are anathema here
Just more water to fill my lungs
I hear someone scream
"Oh God what is it that I've done?"

I am drowning in a digital sea
I am slipping beneath the sound
Here my voice goes to ones and zeros
I'm slipping beneath the sound

A song from somewhere below
Deadly and slow begins
Both sickly and sweet
Now picking up speed
Ushering in the world's end
And the ghost of Descartes screams again in the dark
"Oh how could I have been so wrong?"
But above the screams still the sirens sing their song

I am drowning in a digital sea
I am slipping beneath the sound
Here my voices goes to ones and zeros
I'm slipping beneath the sound

Here my voice goes to ones and zeros

  • If you threw up some tabs I would love you forever.

  • @wakolink no prob! I will try to get to it soon and put it in the video description. I'll post another comment when it's up.

  • dude can you tell me what guitar that is where you got it and how much it cost please?

    great cover xxxxx

  • thanks man! I've tried replying a few times, but youtube keeps giving me shite. Lets hope this one goes through.

The guitar is an Ibanez...the model number on the inside is AEL10D-BK-14-01. I bought it about 5-6 years ago at "Sam Ash" which is the equivalent to a guitar center.

If you've got anymore questions, let me know.

  • u sound like count dracula from sesame street, but your guitar is pretty solid

  • yeah, i really gotta redo this with a different approach on the vocals. I didn't think it would get as many hits as it's getting.
