Medicare supplement - You pay an upfront premium wether you use the insurance or not and most if not all things that Medicare covers but doesn't fully pay for the supplements pays.

Medicare Advantage - You pay co-pays in lieu of an upfront premium only when you use the insurance. Pay as you go. Medicare doesn't pay the claims, the MA carrier does.

This is the only difference between the two. For most people, Medicare Advantage is the more cost effective way to go.

  • @SMACKDANIELS Medicare supplements pay brokers between 10% to 20% of the premium for up to 7 years depending upon the insurance carrier.

  • @SMACKDANIELS The only difference between MA and traditional Medicare is who pays the claims moron. All the same rules of Medicare still apply for the MA carriers. You need to do better research there guy. Medicare is always in charge of making a beneficiary's health care decisions statist. The insurance companies under MA have no say as to what will and won't be covered. Stop getting your 'facts' from socialist propogandists.

  • @SMACKDANIELS Um no. I have been and currently am a broker for the last 5 years. In 2009, the government made MA carriers reduce their commision payments to brokers. Medicare supplements pay alot better commision currently for brokers than do MA & MAPD plans. The only exception is first year commision, but most MA plans a broker sells is not first year.

  • Medicare replacement vs. Supp;ement

  • @residentzombie Uh yea, wink wink, not true at all!! Medicare Supplements average about $250.00 for commission. Medicare Advantage pays $400.00 in commission. This is the bottom line between Medicare Supplements and Medicare Advantage.

Medicare supplement - You and your doctor are in charge of your health care.

Medicare Advantage - The insurance company is in charge of making your health care decisions. Now, what makes more sense?

  • actually commissions are higher with MAPD. I think MAPD's are ok (right now) but its only a matter of time before they go away and I've seen consumers get hurt from MAPD's due to service area issues and networks. Like you said if you have your health MAPD's are fine, problem is you don't know when you will lose your health. Not saying I'm right and you're wrong, its just my opinion that in building long term relationships with clients, MAPD's could disrupt that in the longhaul.

  • as does Medicare Advantage, you missed my point. The agent is being biased towards Medicare Supplements over Medicare Advantage with half truths and disinfo. I sell both and the answer lies with the individual. If one does alot of doctoring or is uncomfortable with co-pays, then pay $150+ per months for a supp. If one is fairly healthy and does little doctoring, there is nothing wrong with a MA or MAPD plan. I realise commision is higher with supps as well. wink, wink

  • which triggers an open enrollment

  • Premiums always change as well with Medicare Supplements. Most Supplements go up each year based on age and based on cost of living.
