Looks like you're rakin in fifth gear.

@brian93ist One of our 640 rakes has a serial number that starts with the characters BO640, followed by the serial number, and ends with the letter E.
The other 640 rake starts with the number 640 followed by additional numbers.
Regardless of the year model, the serial number will include the 640 on the serial number tag/plate.

@brian93ist No bearing on the dolly wheel; it turns on a bolt through the middle.

@brian93ist Will be working on the JD 640 hay rake this coming weekend.
Will try to remember to make a video on the grease points and checking the gear box oil level.
This rake was used in tandem with the other JD 640 rake; have not "refurbished" the other rake.

The MT's only have 4 forward gears and 4th gear is a good "road" gear.
Usually drive all three MTs and M in 3rd gear.
"Sam" is our favorite tractor for pulling the hay rake and always runs in 3rd gear.
Will be attaching the hay rake to "Sam" today getting ready to bale hay this week.
Glad you liked the video.

This is one of my favorite videos made during the second cutting of 2009.

Thanks for the compliment on this JD 640 hay rake.
Bought 2 very used JD 640 rakes from the same fellow.
Took this one completely apart and rebuilt and repainted it.
Also rebuilt the gearbox.
All new rake teeth.
Two new ground driven tires.
Grease it before every use and wash it when I'm done.
It is basically a "new" 40 year old hay rake.
