at the bottom of the layers box there are buttons, just find the new layer button click then then select the new layer and paste the image on it

with the lasso tool you have to trace around the image with it yourself thats why i use the magic wand initialy then clean up with laso

how do you insert in image not as a back ground, but just to put on top of the original picture.

Open another image file and drag it into the the current file. Drag and drop.

im farily new to photoshop myself, but i would guess...
create new
new layer (plus your background layer thats already there)
draw a square for the pic while the background lair is highlited... and open the image there. itll show up as a pic on the background lair... just try it i guess. good luck :)

Dunno if you've found out yet, but i had the same problem, and i thought you might want to know;) all you've got to do is right click on the lasso tool, and select the polygonal lasso tool.
