West African Drum class: Djembe solo technique and phrasing for 4/4 rhythms with slo mo section. These are common "feels" used in advanced djembe solos and rhythms. The flam exercise is: rt flam then rt slap, then lf flam with a left slap.
The second exercise or feel is groups of three notes each hitting in different parts of the pulse or down beat. The first group of 3 notes starts on the downbeat. The 2nd group of notes ends on the down beat. The third group is all offbeats(no downbeat). Filmed at Rumpuree in Bangkok, thailand

  • my brain finally let go and i felt it, the patapa pitipi patapa pitipi patapa piti! what a cool door. and what a thick wall it was in front of it... i tried just listening and playing, just "doing it". the success was not systematic, no feeling, just mechanics. then took a looong pause. then took a pen and a pencil, then danced and sang it to slow clapping and finally to a strict metronome, and creating my own song accentuating the "ones" of the underlying 4/4 was what finally worked. thanks. :)

  • @tallinndrums Aha! Good work! Thanks for explaining your learning process as well. Everyone has different ways they learn..:)

  • The new (Michael Pluznick) MP Eco Pro 12 and 13" djembes are now in production! They will be available in the USA at X8 drums. We will also be shipping out in minimum orders of 10 drums from Bali if you live somewhere else. Contact me here if you are interested in ordering.

  • love the slow motion part with the low frequency sound as well!

  • The sound is sacrificed in the slow motion section for the benefit of seeing the part. Please see the notes (above) for further details!
