The Salina Song by Jewel - June 17, 2010 - Stiefel Theatre
Salina Kansas
Looking to the future but not forgetting the past
Salina Kansas
It's my first time here but it sure won't be the last
Settled in 1856, along the Smoky River
It became a staging post for the prospecters headed to Pike's Peak
And the trading post between the Natives and Fort Leavenworth
After the Civil War, progress surely came
With the Union Pacific Rail, yeah, the future rode that train
The next big boom was World War II
With the Schilling Air Force base
Farms with wheat were America's heartbeat and still are today
Salina Kansas
Looking to the future but not forgetting the past
Salina Kansas
It's my first time here but it sure won't be the last
See those skies of blue
See those fields of green
Lucky to have open space and fresh air to breathe
The best place in Kansas to raise a family
The American dream is alive you see in the Land of the Free
Salina Kansas
Looking to the future but not forgetting the past
Salina Kansas
It's my first time here but it sure won't be the last
Visit the Kenwood Cove Aquatic Park
Or see a play at the Community Theatre after dark
Or take the Rolling Hills Wildlife Adventure
Or see a show at the Stiefel Theater
Salina Kansas
Looking to the future but not forgetting the past
Salina Kansas
It's my first time here but it sure won't be the last

The skating rink is is still open and no the pumpkin guy hasn't sold yet. Guess there was a deal on the table but it fell through. Don't think it was with the city though. :o)

The Vogue theatre isn't there anymore and neither is The Corner Shop. Most of my childhood memories gone lol. I wonder if the skating rink is still open or if the pumpkin guy ever sold his land to the city.

This is like one of those really terrible tourism commercials... I don't hate Salina, but I have to say, I'm quite glad that Salina is now just the place I came from, rather than the place where I live.

I have lots of fond memories of Salina, having visited dozens of times over the years to see family. It is a lovely city, and a real shame that it has fallen on such hard times. I hope it has a comeback. And I agree, how can Jewel not reference Cozy Burgers?!? That joint is as Salina as cattle, corn and sunflowers!
