Part 1 of 3.
"In 2004, the Chicago Office of Fine Arts-Dept. of Cultural Affairs asked Hector Duarte, an established muralist, painter, and print maker if he would be interested in opening his studio to the general public during the month of October; designated as Chicago's artist month. Hector in his generous and familiar way responded by saying that he had an entire community around of artists and neighbors who were potentially as gifted and interesting to visit. And so with the city's blessing, Hector and his wife Linda Lutton helped organize us into a cohesive group that were already connected socially, many of us being friends for many years. As the seasoned artists began to collaborate with the emerging, we began what would be an annual artist-run event known as the 18th Street Pilsen Open Studios. http://www.pilsenopenstudios.org The artists that are represented in this commercial length cut (29 minutes TRT) here on youtube represent much of the core group that was behind the continuation of this community effort.(see credits in part 1). The original Director's Cut is a total of 44 minutes."
2005 Honorable Mention for the National Hometown Video Festival presented by the Alliance for Community Media. In this local documentary of community artists in Chicago's historic Pilsen neighborhood, Nelson captures the creativity and imagination of grass root artists engaged with their surroundings and the diversity of styles and philosophies of these "vecinos" (neighbors). The production was collaborative from pre through post production and special thanks go out to the public screening at Meztli Theatre, cable broadcasts by Chicago Access TV, Bolingbrook Cable Access, and Comcast in Skokie, IL.
