    This phrase actually has quite an interesting background.

    During the Victorian Era swearing on Holy names was strictly prohibited, so to avoid the punishment and to support the idea of profanity rejection common folk developed a wide variety of malapropisms, such as "Dangnabit" (God damn it) or "Cheese ‘n’ Rice" (I think you got that one). And the phrase "Suffering Succotash" replaced "Suffering Savior."

    Thought someone might be interested in this info.
