When you pour more fuel in a cylinder than the motor can burn, that leftover fuel is "unburnt" which is where black smoke comes from.
Oh, btw, I've already been certified, employed, and moved on from the automotive trade, so while you'll "have your degree in a month" I've already been there, done that.

weak to much smoke get your fuel to air ratio right !! my 05 5.9 tuned right putting down 996 pound feet of torque with minimal smoke noobs!
