Jurors who are recommending the death penalty for the killer of 11 women in Cleveland say they felt his statement from the witness stand was rehearsed and lacked remorse.

The jurors in the trial of 51-year-old Anthony Sowell spoke to reporters Wednesday in the courtroom after recommending that he be executed for his crimes.

Jurors identified themselves by number and withheld their names for privacy and security reasons.

One juror said Sowell's unsworn statement in court Monday was "completely rehearsed" and lacked remorse.

Jurors spoke up saying "No, no" when asked if Sowell's statement meant to spare his life actually helped him.

Another juror says he's convinced that Sowell was faking a mental illness, a key issue put forward by the defense.

Judge Dick Ambrose will sentence Sowell on Friday morning.

Al Jazeera's Craig Mauro reports.
