Fascism.

The very word evokes dark, menacing images of troops, marching in lockstep, in support of a terrible, malevolent ideology.

In a word, it suggests the followers of Mussolini in Italy, or Hitler in Germany.

To most of us, its very mention suggests its foreign nature; its Otherness.

Therein lies its danger. For, because it is seen as a foreign ideology, the inevitable idea arises: "It can't happen here."

Those who say this, either don't know, or don't want to know, American history. They prefer the safe myths, to the ugly truths of how this country came to be what it is.

What is fascism? In short, it is the merger of state and corporate interests.

Fascism is more than a funny-sounding word; it is dyed deep into the fabric of American life; and creeps forward today, under cover of 'Law.'

  • @Tougemaster06 you're a political science major? well that settles everything.

  • @JamesD423 Mussolini wasn't a socialist when he was a fascist. He started out as a socialist and then was expelled from the Italian Socialist party. Fascism is right wing buddy... I am a political science major and I disagree with you

  • Free comrade Mumia!

  • Fascism - A system of government marked by centralization of authority under a dictator, stringent socioeconomic controls, suppression of the opposition through terror and censorship, and typically a policy of belligerent nationalism and racism.

  • I hope you're not suggesting fascism, especially German fascism, falls within the far right of the political spectrum. Most analysts agree fascism is neither left nor right (Mussolini, who was a leading voice in the socialist movement, described his fascism as a "third way," i.e. niether left nor right). As far as German Fascism, or National Socialism, many scholars agree it was very similar to (although opposed to) Soviet Communism

  • Nazi Germany was a capitalist country, with private property rights, private ownership of most means of production, market economy, ban on labor unions and strikes, and a ban on socialist and communist parties.

  • The Nazis actually allowed people, even the richest industrialists to hold on to their businesses. The only difference was that those businesses had to produce whatever the Fuhrer demanded of them, like in a command economy.

  • stop with the swastikas already!!!
