TV9 OM : (Epi-168) : " NAGARADHANE " - SNAKE WORSHIP...............!

Snakes have been revered throughout India since the ancient times, especially cobras. Their mysterious appearance and slithering movements have kept people in awe. Nagaradhane is a form of snake worship that is thought to originate with the Bunts of Tulu Nandu. It is a unique tradition prevalent in the coastal districts of Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, and Kasargod. It is believed that the worship of snakes comes from the livelihood of the region. Since most of their food is grown in patties, the snakes are key in protecting the crops from rodents. This might also explain why the snake is also a symbol of fertility. Nagaradhane is unique both in its traditions and its rituals. If anyone refuses to perform the rituals, it is believed that the snake will curse them for eternity. There are two main rituals that are performed. Aashleshabali is similar to the human death rituals. Nafamandala is longer and more colorful. It celebrates the union between the male and female snake. It is performed by two priests in a Nagabana where snakes have their own shrines. A Nagabana is a sacred grove where the snake god rests.
