when you crank it?
adjust the spark lever up to you so it run's smooth,
Dad had a 29 60A brigg's leatherback fordor.
im familar with A's as well as T's too.
dont fret about it you'll get used to it pretty quick
as you cant mess it up too much by doing the wrong thing
you just listen to it
and then play with the spark and throttle levers till you know the engine is smooth.

Simple age of cars was 50s and 60s.
That is what I think. But the truth is no car is "simple".

The first car I can remember being in was a whippet and then a model A

They say times were simpler back then. But their wrong...when it comes to starting cars. Thats a lot to do considering now you just twist a key.
They were easier to work on then but a lot more trouble to operate. They needed worked on a lot more too. I had a model A once. I thought the spark advance was so it would be easier to crank by hand. I am not sure though.

@Kagaines The spark advance is for both hand cranking and electric starting. If you had the spark too advanced while hand cranking, you could get kick back on the crank that could break an arm. If it was too advanced on electric starting, the kickback could damage the starter gears.
