St Laurence O'Toole Pipe Band, from Dublin, under Pipe Major Terry Tully playing at the Scottish Pipe Band Championships at Levengrove Park, Dumbarton on 21 May 2011. The band's MSR selection was Lord Alexander Kennedy, The Islay Ball, and Mrs MacPherson of Inveran. The band was placed in first place for drumming and second place overall in the Grade One competition.

The band, the current World Champions, was second last to play and the appalling weather conditions had, if anything, got worse. The march past had been cancelled, many stall holders had departed, and most spectators had called it a day. Only a relatively small crowd of fellow musicians and family supporters remained clustered round the Grade One arena to hear this beautiful playing.

Disclosure note

The inclement conditions caused difficulty for many. Two of the top three bands had 'early chanter' problems. This band was one of them. In a recording/film/video situation editing out the few milliseconds involved is a no-brainer and relatively easy to do. This is what I have done, and hopefully you won't notice (or mind). However, it was a competition, and so it is only fair to disclose this.

  • wow. fANTASTIC!

  • Splendid piping but needs a lttle more work, excellent flourishes by tenors. One piper's kilt is too long or he is too short.

  • Drumming is amazin!! but the piping isnt quite there yet.. not up there with the FM.. this years worlds will be a hard one to call..

  • Inclement conditions (and that's putting it mildly sometimes!) are par for the course in Ireland and Scotland, so they're willingly & capably displaying that they are naturally acclimatised and very much up to the mark. Slainte.

  • 2 dislikes? Seriously people, get a grip! The conditions were shit and they still put in a good performance.

  • Sounding brill as always!

  • How the hell do you get that sound in those conditions???? fantastic!!!! World Champions 2012 I think so :O)

  • Heading for another World title

  • The BEST damn band in the World.

  • Brilliant performance; brilliant videos - thanks for sharing !
